The First Cloister

The main facade of the building is flanked by two square towers with Ghibelline battlements. Crossing the moat, once passable only by a drawbridge, one enters the first cloister. The hall, now protected by a large skylight built in the 19th century, features three historic fountains and an imposing entrance gate. The fountains on the south side represent the Tiber and Aniene Roman rivers, while the marble Roman sarcophagus on the east side is topped by an inscription telling of the ancient source of beneficial waters that still feed the park’s fountains today. Passing through a stone arch leads to the second 15th-century cloister.

The Second Cloister

With a square floor plan, the second cloister has a typical Renaissance arched and vaulted portico with stone columns and capitals on three sides. The cloister, also covered in the 19th century by an iron and glass skylight structure, appears as a large jardin d’hiver: from the same period is the trompe-l’oeil on the north wall. In the center of the cloister is the monumental circular travertine well, used in the past for the daily life of the castle. Completing the ground floor’s receptive offerings are the two covered terraces built on the ramparts of the walls. The President’s Terrace
